Paul Leonard Newman was an American actor, film director, race car driver, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. He was best known for his film roles, such as Doug Roberts in The Towering Inferno, Luke Jackson in Cool Hand Luke, Henry "Shaw" Gondorff in The Sting, Frank Galvin in The Verdict, and the titular characters of The Hustler, Hud, Harper, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.

For Disney, he voiced Doc Hudson in Cars, the role having been his final one, though he did reprise this role in the 2006 video game of the same name and Mater and the Ghostlight. Unused recordings of Newman originally recorded for Cars were also used for Doc Hudson in Cars 3.[1] He also played Fast Eddie Felson in the 1986 Touchstone Pictures film The Color of Money (in which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor) and Earl Long in Blaze.

  • Newman was originally considered for the role of Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. However, Bob Hoskins ended up being cast instead.[2]
  • Newman was once considered, along with Jim Carrey as Buzz Lightyear, to voice Woody in Toy Story. However, he turned down the offer and Tom Hanks was cast instead.[3]
    • However, Newman later went on to voice Doc Hudson in Cars, which was his final role before his death.
