"I'm the one who's really sad, when I smile it comes out mad!"

Pele, the Goddess of Fire and Volcanoes, is one of the Tiki Goddesses in the pre-show of Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room.

Pele is the short-tempered goddess of fire and volcanoes, in traditional Māori myth she is also affiliated as the mother goddess of the Pacific islands. Some cultural practices include making offers to Pele at the Halemaʻumaʻu crater with flowers, food and gin. Some regions even have Pele as the feature of a sort of urban-legend where she appears on the roads of the Pali highway at night to stop cars and trucks with her powers and can only be passed by feeding pork to her dog.

Pele's idol appears in the garden pre-show of the Enchanted Tiki Room in Disneyland. She informs guests on her presence in Polynesian myth and has fire blow from her head.

Printed Materials[]

Disney Kingdoms[]

In Disney Kingdoms: Enchanted Tiki Room she and the other Tiki Gods have small roles as animate statues roaming the island. In the event that an animal wishes to lose the gift of speech, Pele and the others take part in a ceremony to take it back, though this is a rare occurrence.

Tales from Adventureland[]

In Tales from Adventureland: The Keymaster's Quest, Pele, and the other Tiki Gods are a man-made security system to protect the rare birds of the otherwise magical Tiki Room by frightening superstitious poachers, with the fiery effect of Pele's statue being far more intimidating.

  • The fictional goddess Te Fiti in Moana was likely inspired by Pele.
