"When You Wish Upon a Star" is the signature song written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington for Walt Disney's 1940 adaptation of Pinocchio.[1] The original version was first sung by Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards)[1] and is heard over the opening credits and in the final scene of the film.
The song has been universally praised since its release. With its theme relating to wishes, dreams, and magic; all of which have become synonymous with the Disney brand, and the song has since become the official anthem of The Walt Disney Company as a whole, having been used as the theme for the Walt Disney anthology series since the 1950s, and played alongside the Walt Disney Pictures logo before many films since the 1980s.
Lyrics[]
When you wish upon a star,
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream,
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing...
Like a bolt out of the blue,
Fate steps in and sees you through...
When you wish upon a star,
Your dreams come true
Jiminy Cricket:
When your heart is in your dream,
No request is too extreme
Chorus:
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams.. come... true!
You'll find your dreams come true!
When you wish upon a star,
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream,
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing...
Like a bolt out of the blue,
Suddenly it comes in view...
When you wish upon a star,
Your dreams come true
When a star is born,
They possess a gift or two
One of them is this:
They have the power to make a wish come true.
When you wish upon a star,
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream,
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing...
Like a bolt out of the blue,
Suddenly it comes in view...
When you wish upon a star,
Your dreams.. come... true!
When you wish...
When you wish...
When you wish...
Wish upon a star
When you wish...
When you wish...
When you wish...
Wish upon a star
When you wish...
When you wish...
When you wish...
Wish upon a star
When you wish upon a star,
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
When you wish...
When you wish...
When you wish...
Wish upon a star
If your heart is in your dream,
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
When you wish...
When you wish...
Fate is kind.
She brings to those who love
And this sweet, fulfillment of
Their secret's longing
Like a bolt out of a blue,
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true
When you wish...
When you wish (yeah yeah yeah)
When you wish...
Wish upon a star... (your dreams come true.)

When you wish...
When you wish...
When you wish...
Wish upon a star
Fate is kind.
She brings to those who love
And this sweet, fulfillment of
Their secret's longing
When you wish upon a star,
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
When you wish...
When you wish...
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true
When you wish...
When you wish...
When you wish...
Wish upon a star... (wish upon a star)
When you wish...
When you wish...
When you wish... (when you wish)
Wish upon a star...
Jiminy Cricket:
When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream,
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Chorus:
Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing
Jiminy Cricket:
Like a bolt out of the blue,
Fate steps in and sees you through...

The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing...
Like a bolt out of the blue,
Fate steps in and sees you through...
When you wish upon a star,
Your dreams come true
Far as real as you want them to be
Dreams are as real as the sky and the sea
Within your perspective, your voice uphill
Now you believe in me
And I believe...
When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams... come... true!
Jiminy Cricket (Singing):

Trivia[]
- In 1985, a rendition of the song plays over the original Walt Disney Pictures 'Blue Castle' logo - it starts with a synthesized chorus and a quiet brass rendition of the song's first bar, with sparkles evoking pixie dust, followed by an uprising flute and a reversed cymbal crash, then a full orchestral finish of the song's first bar, ending with a synthesizer.
- The rendition of the song in most Walt Disney Pictures logos starting with the 2006 one goes as follows: it starts with a piano/string piece in which brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments join in and build into an orchestral rendition of the song itself, and it closes out with a long, bombastic, drum-rolled orchestral note. There's also a longer version that is used in the Walt Disney Pictures 'Mountain Castle' logo (used since late 2022).
- The first four notes of the song are heard in Aladdin when the Genie asks the titular character, "Aladdin, you just won the heart of the Princess! What're you gonna do next?", while shaping his fingers like a TV screen in a parody of the "I'm going to Disney World!" commercials. (This can be heard on the soundtrack album as part of the track "Aladdin's World".)
- On Volume 1 of Disney's Greatest Lullabies, this song is set to clips from Pinocchio, Dumbo, Sleeping Beauty, Wynken, Blynken and Nod, The Rescuers, and Lullaby Land.
- In Disney's Sing-Along Songs: Disneyland Fun, Mickey shoots fireworks from his fingers during this song, just like in the Walt Disney World 15th Anniversary Special, Sorcery in the Sky at Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney's Hollywood Studios), and its successor Fantasmic!.
- The song is the first Disney song to win an Oscar, earning an Academy Award for Best Song.
- The American Film Institute ranked the song #7 in their 100 Greatest Songs in Film History.[2]
- In 1991, Billy Joel sang the song in the TV special Simply Mad About the Mouse and its soundtrack.
- In 2009, the song was preserved into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
- The song was heavily featured in Remember... Dreams Come True at Disneyland and Wishes at the Magic Kingdom as the opening and finale song. It was also heard in Believe... There's Magic in the Stars, Disneyland Forever, and in Fantasy in the Sky during a countdown to the new year.
- The song was also performed on The Muppet Show in the Star Wars episode as the closing number. Ironically, Disney now owns the rights to both the Muppets and Star Wars franchises.
- Jodi Benson and Paige O'Hara, the original voices of Ariel and Belle, recorded a duet version of the song. Their version, however, includes a portion of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" in the beginning.
- The song was referenced in The Muppets at Walt Disney World when Mickey Mouse tells the Muppets that a saying they have around The Walt Disney Company is "When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true".
- In 1999, Eddie Carroll sang the song in Disney on Ice: Let's Celebrate (100 Years of Magic).
- Idina Menzel, the voice of Elsa, performed a cover of this song for her album, Holiday Wishes.
- Pentatonix did a cover of this song for their album, We Need a Little Christmas.
- The song was heard in The Simpsons season 31 episode Bart the Bad Guy, which was made after Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios).
- A rock version of this song is played at the very beginning of Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.
- Another rock version is briefly heard during the opening logo of Prom.
- In 2012, an arrangement of the song composed by Danny Elfman is used in Frankenweenie, although it transitions to a spookier tune near the end of the opening Walt Disney Pictures logo. This also happens 10 years later in Hocus Pocus 2 with a similar arrangement of the song composed by John Debney and a different spooky tune, through the transition occurs after the first few bars of the song are played.
- A slow 1950s-style jazz version of the song is played at the beginning of the 2019 remake of Lady and the Tramp.
- A discordant version of the song is played at the very beginning of Soul (when the opening logo is shown), when Joe Gardner is trying to teach it to his music class.
- Two Mexican band versions are played at the very beginning of Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva la Fiesta and Coco.
- In 2016 and 2019, John Debney and Hans Zimmer composed two similar renditions of the song at the very beginning of The Jungle Book and The Lion King live-action remakes.
- Another arrangement of the song by James Newton Howard (with Gustavo Dudamel conducting the London Philharmonia Orchestra and solo pianist Lang Lang on the piano) is played at the very beginning of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
- Many other arrangements of the song are used in various WB cartoon shorts.
- In the prologue to Whenever I Hear This Music used in A Disneyland Paris Sing-Along Spectacular, the music piece that Tickety Tock is dancing to is a cha-cha-cha arrangement of this song.
- In the Modern Madcaps short Frednocchio, Matthew Morrison's cover of the song plays over the Walt Disney Pictures logo and the opening credits. Immediately after this song ends, Jiminy Cricket arrives to introduce himself and sing Just Imagine in the style of the original 1940 version of this song, complete with a chorus. A new version of the song is also sung by Jiminy Cricket and Finny the Shark at the end of the short.
- In the 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio, the Blue Fairy (portrayed by Cynthia Erivo) sings the song (starting from the line 'Fate is kind') as she leaves through the window and later sings the song in full during the closing credits and as part of the first track of the movie's soundtrack. This particular cover by Cynthia Erivo is also used for Sandy the Starfish's performance of the song in ReWiggled 2, and resembles the version of the song used to open the original 1940 version of Pinocchio (minus a chorus singing the bridge, as Sandy/Cynthia Erivo sings the whole song from start to finish).
- In the same film, the song is also sung (only the last two lines) at the very beginning where Jiminy Cricket floats into the village, passing the Walt Disney Pictures logo on his way (this is a homage to when the song opened the original 1940 movie).
- Sara Bareilles sang this song as part of the Wonderful World of Disney's ninth season and the Walt Disney Company's 100th anniversary.
- The song also appears at the beginning of Disney Jam!: A Musical Celebration, sung by Myrtle the Turtle over footage of the special's characters enjoying a day in Main Street U.S.A. This version is a homage to the 1992-1998 'calypso' version of the Sesame Street theme song.
- The song appears at the end of the short film Once Upon a Studio, where it is shown to be similar to the reprise of Rainbow Connection from The Muppet Movie. As they all gather for a group photo at the Disney studios (in front of the Walt Disney Animation Studios building), all the Disney characters sing it while Mirabel plays it from accordion, Scat Cat from trumpet, and Alan-A-Dale from lute.
- As an added bonus, the original 1940 recording of the song can be heard when Jiminy Cricket finishes the song and everyone else joins in.
- In the Merrie Melodies short Back to Tokyo Disneyland, the song sounds similar to its Once Upon a Studio version, but it is in E Major the whole time and Jiminy Cricket sings the first two lines of the song.
- The album has Craig Toungate's recent cover of the song.
- The 2023 movie Wish features a rendition of the song played on an acoustic guitar as part of the post-credits scene, and continuing over the closing logos - even the Walt Disney Pictures logo. It is also possible that Sabino is the original writer of the song.
- Therefore, ReWiggled 2, Once Upon a Studio, and Back to Tokyo Disneyland all feature a different ditty at the start of the song, and a new ditty plays at the end of the song in Disney Jam!: A Musical Celebration, Once Upon a Studio, and Back to Tokyo Disneyland.
- The Shari Lewis and Agri Birds 4 versions are notable for having two additional verses.
